Parsons Nature Reserve is situated in the Northern Section of Balule Nature Reserve, 40kms South of Phalaborwa. Balule Nature Reserve, and therefore Parsons by incorporation, is within a protected area in Limpopo Province, and forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park and the UNESCO proclaimed Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserve. This biosphere reserve is the largest of its kind in the world.
The Reserve is comprised of many beautiful landscapes such as rocky outcrops, plains and riverine bush and shares an un-fenced border with the renowned Kruger National Park. These various habitats support a healthy diversity of wildlife and offer a remarkable birding experience with more than 250 species recorded.
The perennial Olifants River which runs through the reserve attracts many long-legged birds that wade in water in search of food. The impressive fig trees along the riverbank attract fruit-eating birds such as the purple-crested turaco, black collard barbet, plum-colored starling and trumpeter hornbills. This is also an excellent area for raptors – especially eagles – and owls might be seen on night drives.
Migratory birds can be observed from November to April such as the woodlands kingfisher and the European roller. Big 5 species are encountered frequently on the reserve, but it is a distinct honour to be part of the secret lives of the lesser-known species.
Hoedspruit shops and medical facilities are 40 minutes away by car and the proximity of the Kruger National Park, the Drakensberg, the Olifants River and the Blyde River Canyon makes Parsons the perfect base for excursions and day trips.
